Overview

Introduction

This course will allow you to progress your skills to efficiently develop, modify and analyse Excel financial

models for projects in the oil and gas sector or any other industry that the client prefers. The hands-on

training course will cover essential topics such as best practice financial modelling, 3-way financial

statements, the debt service cover ratio (DSCR), loan life cover ratio (LLCR), sensitivity analysis, breakeven

price, funding mechanics, operational, investment metrics and modelling for other sectors.

This course will provide hands-on experience in how to go from scratch to a full functioning financial model

suitable for investment scenario evaluation.

  • Mastering key formulas in financial models
    • Introduction to financial modelling by covering useful keyboard navigations, formatting, name ranges and data grouping
    • Going through the 10 most commonly found Excel formulas / functions in financial models via a hands-on and practical exercise.
  • Skills for sophisticated analysis of oil gas projects (note: case study / industry to be refined depending on client’s requirements)

    Understand the different types of circular references and how to avoid them

    Understand the pros and cons of using macros in models, when to use and when to avoid

    Introduction to the VBA environment by building in a commonly found macros in financial models

Practical application of macros in transaction and deals modelling

    Building in a debt sizing macro to solve for a target maximum gearing or minimum DSCR

    Building in a macro to solve for forward-looking circularities and a combined macro that solves for all macros in the model

Understand modelling auditing and validation techniques

    Understand how to incorporate self-checks into all of your calculations

    Learn the tricks of the trade to rapidly identify a wide range of errors and decrease model risk

    Avoid big picture errors with analytical review methodologies

    Understand the different model auditing processes

    Discussion of where to focus your efforts in reviewing a model on a live deal while facing limited time constraint

    Discussion of differences and similarities between an O&G vs modelling for other industries of client’s preference such as renewable energy, etc.
